Birthday parties with a side order of parental guilt

I love a bit of Pinterest. Rather partial to whiling away time that should be spent actually doing things looking at other people doing things. Crafty creative exciting things, things that look reaaaaally reaaaallllly good on Instagram. I make boards and pin like a mad woman for months before the impending birthday vowing that this year I will actually do that party with a theme..Frozen..mad scientists..My Little Pony..superhero all have been considered. But it just won't happen. I get Pinterest paralysis I'm sure this is not unique to me? At least I bloody well hope it isn't or I really am crap at being a mum! My heart is totally in it, the intention is there I just struggle to actually get the ideas off the board and going on in real life.

The draw where party things go to die

Now for a little list of excuses to make me feel better about this state of affairs.
1) Illness..I had kind of organised a party for Dora only to have to cancel it due to hand, foot and mouth. Dora was very gracious about it and didn't seem too mad at the twins for bringing the lurgy home. I breathed a (very quiet) sigh of relief and promised to do it another time, thankfully she then forgot about this.
2) Age..Last year the twins seemed far too young to really remember a full blown birthday party thus I got myself off the hook and took them to the zoo instead. Result.
3) Social shyness issues..I could roll out this one as an excuse to not have anyone over ever. Otis is not too keen on crowds at the moment so a full blown invite the whole class thing would push the dude over the edge, not fun for anyone. But this excuse is null and void as Otis is a twin and that isn't going to wash with Indy.

So I have to bite the bullet. I'm not setting myself up for a fall and going with a theme but I have invited (Facebook messages and email..no printed personalisation going on round here) a small (concession to shy dude) group of friends round for a BBQ. This is a big step to overcoming party Pinterest paralysis..PPP. Now I just need to do food and cake and make up games and do party bags. Oh god what have I done? PPP is starting to set in and I feel I might need a lie down/a drink/a party planner..all 3!
The twins have requested a rainbow cake that involves me baking! Thanks kids. Is it ok to use Betty Crocker? I would but I don't think I would be able to sleep at night for the guilt. So if you have been invited to the upcoming birthday please forgive any shoddy cakes and lack of party planning it's not my fault I have PPP.

Keeping it all in

I have been thinking about writing on and off for the past four years. I basically stopped when I fell pregnant with the twins. I felt totally overwhelmed, shocked and more than a little bit stupid. Pregnant by accident at my age! Duh... I blogged about it in my head but never wrote it down. I let my shame and embarrassment censor me, I feel sad about that.

By the time I was ready to let that go and get back to writing another road block appeared. The biological father of the twins made it abundantly clear that I should shut up about it. I received pretty clear instructions that he did not want me to talk about my pregnancy on any social media platform. I was so vaunerable I meekly complied, I didn't rock the boat, I stayed low key. The whole time silently seething and continuing to blog in my head

By the time the twins arrived I had lost my mojo with writing and my sense of frustration was overridden by my lack of time to shower/dress/feed myself etc..twins have a tendency to de-rail even the most prepared parent. Little did I know that the biggest obsticle was yet to come and when it came I was so blindsided and consumed by it that any hope I had of writing again had vanished. This time my censorship was neither self imposed nor from any fear of upsetting anyone. This time it was legal.

When the papers were served I went in to fight or flight mode. Flight was not an option as I would be charged with kidnapping my own kids so I chose to fight. I fought the court case that came with every last bit of energy that I could muster it took every moment of my time that was not spent tending to my 2 month old babies and a then 4 year old Dora. When I say every last moment I mean just that, the babies napped, I made phone calls to lawyers, the kids with grandparents, I was making notes, documenting researching and making sure I had everything in place. In the meantime I was not allowed to talk publicly about what I was put through. I kept it all in.

Keeping it all in has its own special price. I knew that I was going to pay physically for it sooner or later. At the time I just put one foot in front of the other with the aim of getting home to Thailand with my children and back to the life I had worked hard to build for them. And come home we did. After 9 months of fighting I won and we left the U.K with the correct papers and permissions in hand. But by then keeping it in was so ingrained in me that it was impossible to write. I would write more about that whole experience but I'm still not ready and I'm still working out how and where to start. I don't hold the U.K authorities in very high esteem for the way they treat women..and that is in my polite public blogging voice. So as not to offend! Those of you who know me in real life can fill in the expletive blanks..

The physical price has come and been a hard one to pay. Autoimmune illness is often triggered by extreme stress and I had that by the bucket load. Symptoms are so sneaky they can be fobbed off...fatigue..I've got 3 kids! Skin is dry/spotty...it's the weather or your feeling low...joint pain..see fatigue above! Oh and I'm getting older! One infection followed another and then the fear kicks in. What's wrong here? Why do I sleep from 8pm and still feel like I ran a marathon? Must mention to the hairdresser that my hair is falling out..hmm maybe I should see the doctor. But life with kids takes first place and as so many before me have done I put my health down the to do list and fobbed myself off.

That has stopped I'm not keeping anything in anymore. I'm looking after myself. I'm taking back my voice, my blog, my power. I am writing this to remind myself what keeping it in does and to anybody who isn't keen on me writing what I think or feel..DON'T read it! But I will not allow fear or censorship to have a place in my life anymore and I won't be shamed or hide. Social media! I'm back. Instagram. Facebook. Periscope. Twitter..nobody puts Beki in a corner.

Sorry couldn't resist the cheese xx

Moving Drama

Fate stepped in and over my morning coffee I saw the bulldozer roll in and rip out the few trees that surrounded our house. It was time for us to get out of town. The traffic noise, pollution and total lack of trees in the garden had finally worn me down. What was the point of living in the tropics if you can't sit outside and enjoy it? Having a moment of quiet disbelief that they were truly turning the plot next door into a building site my phone rang.
After the bulldozer
Do you want to move and live up the mountain? My friend was calling to give me the heads up that the perfect house for us was soon to be available. I wasn't prepared at all...dates were horrible, other half away at work..school holidays..rainy season. My health was dreadful but staying next to a building site was never going to help. So I thought about it and followed my gut. We were moving.
Fast forward to the move and note that I between I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease that attacks my thyroid..fun hey. Our landlord in the house was totally unsympathetic about the need for us to move and despite giving notice and leaving the house immaculate he refused to return the deposit..joy..he warrants a whole post to himself that one! I was growing more stressed by the day.
My mum flew to the rescue and worked like a Trojan. She is a machine. I would never have managed by myself. Day by day she packed and worked tirelessly to get the job done. I managed to hold it together and drive up and down the mountain one car load at a time. It was all coming together and the current tenants moving date was drawing close, plain sailing we thought. Wrong. It seemed we had vastly different approaches to our domestic arrangements aka living in a rodent infested filth hole!!!! I'm not being melodramatic.
Unwanted guests ate the beds

Really it was horrible and we had one week to make it a hygienic habitable place for my family to move into. At this point I questioned the wisdom of my decision but it was too late to turn back.
Many phone calls to the rather upset landlord and a team of cleaners drafted in. New beds in every room and a deep cleaning plan in place it was just about done in time. To be fair we gave the housekeeper a second chance but this ended abruptly when mum found her napping an hour into her working day!
So after all this am I glad we moved? Was the drama worth it? Totally. Now I have the fun job of making the house our home and the not so fun job of evicting the wildlife...
Worth it

The Gallery..Two

This weeks theme was really a no brainer as I have twin toddlers. Then I began to go through my photo library and realised that two means way more than just my twins. Before they came along it was just the two of us.

Me and my Dodo, a little team. With an assortment of stuffed toys, but they don't count.
And then....

Two more sneaked in! More than a bit of a surprise, but hey life's funny like that. We got used to being a team of two but we had room for two more.

Now it's 2 + 2 = 4. We wouldn't have it any other way.
Go on over to see what two has inspired others to post at http://www.thestickyfingersblog.com/

Things you don't see everyday

Popped out to have a quick foot massage (don't hate me!) left the nanny looking after Dodo. Twins happily tucked up in bed..all peaceful...Came home to find...cooking sounds...and an unusual aroma..

Sizzling critters

Our amazing Nanny Noy was just frying up some fresh bugs, as you do. Not so unusual as she is from Isan, but still not something I've seen going on in my kitchen! Noy declares that they are "yummy" and good with whiskey. Noy divides things into two categories "yummy" and "not yummy" bugs fall firmly into the first in her opinion.

Almost done

I watched and learned as they sizzled in my frying pan, knowing that there was only one outcome to this discussion on the merits of eating bugs. Yes I was going to have to face the moment of being asked to try one.

Done..now pass the whiskey

To top it off I was being watched by Dodo. Not going to be able to insist she tries new things if I don't go for one of these critters with an open mind. So open mind and open mouth it was. It really wasn't that bad, in fact it was alright. Crispy on the outside soft in the middle, not the best thing or the worst. I just wished there had been whiskey involved.

The unexpected twist was from my up for anything Dodo..now bare in mind she is off school for the third day running and has had a fever! She pipes up.."can I try a bug please Noy?" Heart swelled with pride! I love that girl.

Fearless..kinda!?!

The Gallery...Drinks

When looking for pictures for this weeks gallery theme I was struck by how heavily featured in my photo stream drinks really are. Now before you all go yelling "lush" and demanding I seek help its not just the boozy ones! Coffee is also up there on the most often snapped list..mother of 3 yadda yadda...essential to ones sanity.

A photo posted by @beceylan on

In my defence on the subject of the boozy drinks, I live in Bangkok. End of. We are just totally spoilt with my favourite type of inebriant, cocktails. Silly ones served in coconuts, classy ones that knock you on your arse after a few sips (see the Quince drinks list for details!) all cocktail life is here. Oh and it's cheaper than back in London..yup another excuse.
The amazing Vespers at Quince
Fermented pork fried with crispy garlic, chilli and peanuts..Mmm think that will go down nicely with my Margarita!
Another temptation here in Thailand is that you will always find something ridiculously morish and naughty to eat with your chosen tipple. Thai chicken wings are worse than crack.

Hey Mr DJ..Serious TUNES! with extra cheese..

When I spotted Sian and Claire tweeting about clubbing in the 90's on Monday night it set off a week of Spotifying and You Tubing. Dancing like a loon around the kitchen with very bemused kids looking at me like I was from Mars. I have been meaning to write this post since Monday night but I kept on getting distracted by the dancing. Showing my age, bemoaning they don't make tunes like this anymore ! I have turned into a proper Mum.
I spent most of the 90's in Glasgow, I loved it. For a small city it had a crazy amount of places to dance..so I did..most nights. I was eclectic in my choices from The Tunnel, The Arches, Sub Club and Archaos, to the student unions at The Art School and Strathclyde uni. I even did P.R for a few of the clubs to support my dance habit, bit of cash, free drinks and free entry. I do not do queues. Never ever. Slightly odd that the fathers of my kids are both D.J's..as is my brother!

So here you go, the gloriously cheesy (I love a bit of cheese) tunes from my Glasgow clubbing nights..enjoy..

I could go on and on! but..last but by no means least..I know others have posted it too but I had to have it..

Join in with the 90's nostalgia over at Bad Fiction, let us hear a bit of your past! If you were around Glasgow in the 90's I would love to hear your clubbing memories.

#Tippingpoint Make This Stop!

My babies are peacefully having a nap. I am at my computer trying to understand how any human being could go into to the home of any other human being (let alone a child) and brutally snuff out their life. "Snuff out" is far too polite a way to put this..stab them, tie them up and smash their skulls..shoot them..those are the facts of what "soldiers" did to the people of Houla in Syria.

I don't understand, I will never understand how those in power can stand by and watch this happen. I know that diplomatic avenues are being followed but clearly this is having no effect and babies and children are being murdered. Is this not tipping point enough? I won't put the pictures on my blog it is too hard to view and they details of what happened to the people of Houla are told better than I could ever write them in the article from The Times
I am angry, are you angry? I want the killing to stop. I want the people of Houla to know that we are angry about what has been done to them and that we care enough about there children to make this stop.
Please sign the Save the Children petition

Tweet using the hashtags #Tippingpoint #Syria #stopthekilling

Blog, talk to your friends, Facebook it! Share and spread the word anyway you can. Together our voices are loud. If it happened to your kids you would hope that someone in the world would be angry enough to act.

Rain, Riots and rather nice trees

We have been feeling rather stuck lately with the on again off again depths of winter, alternating with surprise! today could be spring! What to wear? What do you dress the kids in? Frankly it's getting tedious..Sort it out British weather..
The clothing dilemma is only trumped by the what to do with the 3 kids that won't cost money..involve transport (we are not a car owning family) and is not weather dependant. I have pretty much run out of steam on that one, so now I am giving up and decided that rain will not be stopping play! Rain gear on, babies on, brollies up and out the door.

Our first foray out in the rain took us just up the road to the One Tree Hill nature reserve in Honor Oak Park. The Hill is part of the green chain walk round London which we are going to start exploring. I was surprised how well sign posted the whole reserve is, loads of info as you make your way round the well marked paths. Wildlife, flora and fauna along with bits of local history are covered on the boards. This little gem really made me smile, it turns out that last years riots are nothing new in our neck of the woods, way back in 1897 up to 100,000 angry Londoners battled with police when a golf club fenced off the hill preventing access to local people. No looting over a plasma screen and a pair of trainers!
As you head up the hill you see St Augustine church, we noticed posters for the One Tree Hill festival which is running from the 18th - 27th of May. You can find a full list of the events of the church website. The further into the reserve you go you almost forget that you are in a city until at the top of the hill you get rewarded with a spectacular view right across London, with Hampstead Heath and Alexandra Palace in the distance.

It's not a huge place and if the weather had been better we would have continued with the green chain walk but just mooching round in the rain looking at the stunning trees and the cloudy view made all of us feel a little bit fresher. Dodo was impressed with the secret nature on her doorstep and the twins loved looking at everything from the cosy comfort of the sling. Otis has been dubbed "nature boy" as he gets a huge grin and starts kicking his legs every time he looks at a tree! We will make the effort to get out a explore more often..fingers crossed in some sunshine.

Oops..I did it again! How Cybher kicked my bad blogging ass!

Cybher 2012

Sorry about the Britney reference but I couldn't help myself. So I'm back. Well actually I have been nowhere (that's another story) but since my last post and my promises to be a better blogger I have been a bit distracted by the 2 little creatures I cooked up last year. Mental..me a mum of 3! How the heck did that happen? The sprogs arrived safe and sound bringing a tidal wave of chaos and madness along with them. They are the most delicious amazing little humans, I am a lucky woman to have the privilege of raising them. Dodo is growing into her new found role as big sister and general bossy madam. Sharing the limelight is never easy when your 4!

Much of what is happening I am not able to talk about. Bangkok is on hold..work plans on hold..life on hold..frustrating painful and more stress than I can put into words. It has been holding me back from blogging for fear of saying the wrong thing or not sounding authentic. Well I have had enough of being gagged. I miss my blog..I miss my life..I don't know where either is going at the moment so I think I will just have to blog about the weather..or maybe not.
I was lucky to be at Cybher at the weekend and it was flipping ah-mazing. Learning opportunities at every turn, podcasting, photography, tech geekery all available. The thing that struck me more than anything else is that when you stick a whole lot of smart women in a venue together for a day huge things can and do happen. The sessions on charity work and blogging for change were both moving and motivating. Sales of Half The Sky must have rocketed thanks to Sian and Jennifer who talked with such passion. My copy landed on the mat this morning and I can't wait to get the babies down for a nap and read! I am so excited about the possibilities and I know there are zillions of projects I want to sink my teeth into in Bangkok.
The discussion on feminism could have led to a conference in it's self! Good job I didn't speak up as time was short enough already..don't get me started on the patriarchal system..but I digress.
Everyone I talked to seemed to agree that we would all like to get together in real life more often, for the inspiration and well cos it's a laugh innit! Yes there was drinking after, leading to a few new hashtags..I laughed till I cried! Conversations as diverse as attachment parenting, dogging, slug trails and unfortunate water park accidents.
So to sum up..Cybher you rocked..women in blogging and social media..you rock too..women in general..ditto..oh and The Leather Satchel Co. Cybher bags were toooo die for!

P.S I am NEVER running a competition EVER..pls check t&c's..This post has no sponsors..blah blah blah..

I am Lucky!..help Save the Children

4 years ago today I was in a hospital bed. Tired, shell shocked and sore I had just had an emergency caesarean section to deliver my first baby. Although this was not the way I had hoped for it to be (I was thinking candles and a waterbirth at home) we were both alive. For millions of women and children round the world this is not the outcome.
My lucky healthy baby Dodo
When things went wrong I had an ambulance to come and take me to a hospital and then later a team was ready to save both me and my child. I moan about the way our health service can be in this country but I am so so lucky to have a service to moan about. The 8 million children who die every year from illnesses that we know how to prevent and can cure need us all to moan a LOT louder to the people who can help make a change.

Please help Save the Children send a message to our leaders by signing this petition to end the health worker crisis. It really really takes 30 seconds of your time!

Half of the 8 million children that die each year are in Africa..3% of the worlds doctors, nurses and midwives are in Africa..it's simply not enough. My baby is 4 years old today..If we had been in Africa we might not be celebrating and that has to change.

Help spread the word on Facebook and on Twitter using the #Healthworkers hashtag.

Happy Happy Birthday Dodo..I'm a lucky mummy to have you xxx

The Gallery: Happy Memory

This weeks gallery prompt has been a tricky one, I had a hard time choosing from so many great memories!  Travel, friends and family all featured in the contenders, but in the end I had to go with these pictures of my Grandmothers 80th birthday party this summer.
The Birthday Girl!
It was a really special day for me as I don't often get to spend time with all the family together. The sun shone all day and we spent the afternoon in my Granddads beautiful garden. This is a place that holds many great childhood memories for me, even though they have moved house since I was a little girl. The planting, pots and style reminds me of the original garden, down to the stone horses that I used to pretend to ride! I watched Dodo play with toys that I remember playing with at the same age and the joy that her great grandparents had from seeing her.

The best Great Granddad ever!

80!!! Never!

Loads of cake and candles
Dodo has worn him out!
I hope that Dodo will be able to remember the day and I'm looking forward to more special memories when my Grandparents meet the twins.
